Before forming Toto the group, its members performed sessions for Steely Dan, [3] Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's leader.
About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour established them as a brand across the globe.
After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It is a departure from the ballads of their previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and make a new album using the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Despite their fame the group had to face a number of setbacks in their later years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a string lineup changes and a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to break up for a few years. But, the group recommenced touring in 2012 following the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return form for the band, and the tour accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
